Obituary:
Orono-David G. Kleinschmidt, 58, died peacefully, Friday, April 20, 2012, in Orono.

David was born on June 8, 1953, in Winchester, Massachusetts, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Kleinschmidt. He graduated from Maine Central Institute with the class of 1971. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy from 1974-1978 as an electronic warfare technician. He graduated from the University of Maine in Orono in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He went on to receive his master’s degree from the University of Maine in Orono in 1983. He worked as an engineering application programmer before returning to the University and becoming their network administrator for their civil and mechanical engineering department.

He was a talented sculptor and builder. He enjoyed time away at Mount Desert Island; sailing, hiking and reading books on his favorite porch hammock. He loved being a father to his children and was a member of the United Baptist Church in Orono.

He is survived by his children, David Kleinschmidt of Rochester, New York, Stephanie Kleinschmidt of Tempe, Arizona and Jeffrey Kleinschmidt of Glenburn; friend and mother of his children, Susan McGarry of Glenburn; brothers, Robert Kleinschmidt Jr and wife Caroline of Redmond, Washington and Mark Kleinschmidt and wife Nijole of Oakland; sister, Martha Reifschneider and husband David of Silver Spring, Maryland; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. A committal service with military honors will be held at the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, in Pittsfield. Friends are welcome to return to the funeral home for a time of gathering following the committal.
