Obituary:Pittsfield-Norman Alvah Rogers, 94, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012, at EMMC in Bangor. He was born on February 21, 1918, in Palmyra, the son of George E. and Gladys M. (Jipson) Rogers. He attended school in Palmyra and graduated with the class of 1936 from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield.
He married Novella M. Cookson in July 1942 and moved to Pittsfield. He served in the United States Army Postal Unit and was honorably discharged in 1946. He continued his postal career by working for the U.S. Postal Service in Pittsfield until his retirement in 1980.
Norman loved the outdoors. He was always walking around town, painting the house or mowing the lawn. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was known for his bountiful vegetable garden. He also enjoyed reading the newspaper, western novels, as well as books about the Civil War. He was a former member of the Peltoma Fish and Game and a founding member of the First Congregational Church of Pittsfield.
He is survived by his son, Brian Rogers and special friend, Sylvia McNichol of Pittsfield; daughter, Tania Carnrick and husband, Douglas of Winslow; two grandchildren that he thought the world of, Jillian Carnrick of Sykesville, Maryland and Jarrod Carnrick of Winslow; and a special nephew, Alvah Wyman and his family of Pittsfield.
He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Novella Rogers; and a brother, Harlan J. Rogers.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Woodlands Assisted Living in Waterville and the Inland Hospital Wound Clinic for the care and comfort that they gave to their father this past year.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, May 31, 2012, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., June 1, at the funeral home with Pastor Kathi Smith officiating. A committal service will follow at the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, in Pittsfield.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Pittsfield Memorial Fund, PO Box 423, Pittsfield, Maine, 04967, in Norman’s memory.
