Obituary for Eugene A. Hopkins Jr

Palmyra, Maine- Eugene A. Hopkins, 85, died peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2019, in Augusta.

Eugene was born August 10, 1934, in Detroit, Maine, to Eugene A Hopkins Sr. and Gladys Vera Huff Hopkins Kenniston and stepfather Bernard Kenniston. On April 19, 1952, Eugene married the love of his life, Peggy McAtee Hopkins. The two of them shared 67 years of wedded bliss.

Eugene graduated from Nokomis Regional High School in 1974, the same year his daughter Kathy graduated. This was an accomplishment that he was very proud of.

Eugene enjoyed sharing new places and experiences with Peggy; they traveled to Canada, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. They boarded The Nova Scotia Prince and the Blue Nose Ferry multiple times… often with their grandchildren in tow. In his later years, Eugene enjoyed his winters in Zephyrhills, Florida, where the golf course became his happy place.

Eugene worked hard to provide experiences and to build life for his family that they could be proud of. He was employed by H.P Hood in the Newport, Maine, plant for 32 years until its closure. This led him to Grants Dairy for a number of years. Eugene took pride in his role as Sexton for Detroit Village Cemetery in his earlier years. He had a passion for grounds-keeping; this was evident if you ever had the privilege of stepping into his yard. He created a beautiful backyard oasis so that he and Peggy could host pool-time with their granddaughters; memories that will forever be cherished. It was no chore for him to look after his granddaughters and great-grandchildren; He was a perfect and loving example of what a husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather should be. With such a full and balanced life, he still found time to enjoy fishing, hunting, and dancing with his beautiful wife.

Eugene is survived by his soul mate, Peggy Hopkins of Palmyra; his daughter Kathy Booth of Pittsfield and her companion Ron Corson of Skowhegan; three grandchildren: Peggy and her husband Gene Rines, Christy and her husband Brian Stock, all of Pittsfield, and Katie and her husband Andy Pinkham of Plymouth; seven great-grandchildren: Christopher and Katelynn Rines, Rylee and Logan Stock, AJ, Grady, and Isabelle Pinkham; and many nieces and nephews. He had a special niece-in-law Dawn Colburn that visited every Saturday while he was at Glenridge Nursing Home in Augusta.

He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Gladys; step-dad Bernard; daughter Sharon Hopkins Stubbs; nephew Richard Colburn; sisters; Earlyle and husband John Colburn, Waneta and husband Vincent (Buster) Clukey, and Thelma and her husband Leonard Valcourt; and his brother Carl and his wife Gracia Hopkins.

The family will honor Eugene’s wishes by having a graveside service at 11 a.m., Sunday, October 27, 2019, at the Sawyer’s Cemetery, Route 7, in Plymouth, Maine, followed by a gathering in the fellowship hall at the Congregational Church, 132 Somerset Avenue in Pittsfield, Maine.
