Obituary for James Lowell Laffin

BURNHAM-James Lowell Laffin, 72, died peacefully on Sunday, December 9, 2018, in Pittsfield.

Jim was born on May 24, 1946, in Arlington, MA, the son of the late Lowell and Dorothy (Whitcomb) Laffin. He grew up in Billerica, MA, and proudly served our country in the United States Marines during the Vietnam Era. He was employed as a truck driver for most of his life.

Jim was a sportsman. He liked being in the woods and shooting. He had a knack for manufacturing his own guns and fishing rods. He was extremely knowledgeable and enjoyed passing on the art of fishing to the neighborhood kids. They all got to hear his lessons of life. He was an avid reader and a lover of history. He made friends with a very special ruffed grouse who would visit him daily in his back yard. He fondly named him Larry.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Amanda Laffin of Burnham; his children, Jim Laffin Jr of Manchester, NH and Suzanne Laffin and companion, Steven Landry, of Burnham; two grandchildren, Lyric Laffin and Iris Laffin-Landry; brothers, David Laffin and wife Maureen of Dracut, MA and Robert Laffin and wife Katie of Billerica, MA; sisters-in-law, Janice Laffin of Framingham, MA and Elizabeth Dumais of Burnham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, Albert Laffin.

The family will receive friends from noon-1 p.m., with a funeral service at 1 p.m., Sunday, December 16, 2018, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield, with Rev. Tom Gilbert officiating. Military honors will be presented for his service to our country. A committal will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, December 21, 2018, the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas, 66675-8516 or at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
