Obituary for Mary Connolly

PITTSFIELD- Mary Rafferty Connolly, 82, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2018, in Farmington, Maine.

She was born on September 22, 1936, in Marion, Virginia, at the home of her maternal grandparents to Philip J. Rafferty and Martha Sprinkle Rafferty. Raised in Summit, NJ, she graduated 2nd in her class from Summit High School, where she was a member of the all-state choir and played violin in the school band. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and following graduation, pursued a Master’s Degree at the University of Maryland, College Park. As a Graduate Assistant, she taught nursing students at nearby Johns Hopkins University and caught the attention of a fellow student at College Park, doctoral candidate James D. Connolly. They married on June 18, 1960. Within a year, they began their family, which would grow to include five children.

Mary and Jim first moved to California and then Albany, New York, before settling on their farm in Pittsfield. There, in addition to her work as devoted mother and wife, Mary enjoyed her gardens, particularly her numerous flower beds throughout their property. This love of gardening was also reflected in her nearly four decades spent as a member of the Pittsfield Community Garden Club, for which she spent several years as an officer in multiple roles. In later years, she also focused on her love for crafts, notable in her needlework, and on her artistic talents, sharing time with close friends in time spent painting and working with pastels. For several years, she shared her artwork through her Christmas cards and she returned to her roots as a teacher, working as a substitute at Maine Central Institute. An avid reader and lover of language, she enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble with her children.

Mary was predeceased by her husband James; her parents; and her sister Sara Rafferty Gallman.

She is survived by her brother, John P. Rafferty and wife Emily K. Rafferty of New York; her children, David and wife Lisa Colson of Waterville, John and wife Andrea Cote of Pittsfield, daughter Elizabeth of Carlsbad, California, Sean and wife Karley of Kalispell, MT and Philip and wife Ronda of Litchfield, NH; grandchildren, Bridget Connolly and her husband Matthew Rasmussen of Rochester, NY, Amelia Connolly of Portland, Larry Colson and wife Amanda of Waterville, Micah Reason of Kalispell, MT and Nicholas, Parker and Zachary Connolly of Litchfield, NH; in addition to numerous cousins, brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces.

Her family encourages donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in her honor.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held with visiting from noon to 1 p.m., with a memorial service immediately following at 1 p.m, on Saturday, December 15, 2018, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave, Pittsfield, with Deacon David Denbow officiating. All are welcome to stay for a time of food and fellowship immediately following the service. A committal will be held in the spring of 2019 at the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield.
